Steps to Take Following a Swimming Pool Accident

On Behalf of | Feb 3, 2014 | Personal Injury |

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that swimming is the most popular recreational activity among children and teens. Disturbingly, however, in 2008, nearly one in eight routine pool inspections resulted in immediate closure due to serious public health and safety violations. Owners and operators of pools have a duty to ensure their pools are safe. If they were negligent and as a result of that negligence you or your child have been injured, you may be entitled to compensation. Examples of negligence are failure to adequately supervise, failure to properly maintain the facilities and failure to warn.

Initial steps

The following are some steps you should take following a pool accident:

  • Seek medical attention – if the injury is serious, urgent medical care may be required, but even for minor injuries, you should see a doctor and get a copy of the medical report
  • Take plenty of photographs of the scene – the camera on your cell phone may be adequate for this purpose
  • Ask any witnesses to the accident for their contact details
  • Write down what happened when your memory is fresh
  • Keep notes of any symptoms
  • Keep a record on any time you need to take off work
  • Don’t admit you were at fault
  • Don’t sign any form of release or waiver or agree to any settlement without seeking the advice of an experienced personal injury attorney
