Benefits available to wounded or disabled service members
If you qualify for veterans disability benefits, you may be entitled to:
- Monthly payments (disability compensation) based on your level of disability
- Traveling expenses for getting medical treatment
- A clothing allowance if your medication, injury or prosthetic damages your clothing
- A one-time automobile grant
- A grant for adaptive equipment

Qualifying for veterans benefits
Veterans disability benefits work differently from SSDI and SSI. While Social Security disability programs are only available to those who are completely disabled and totally unable to work, veterans are able to receive benefits based on their level of disability. In fact, veterans who are determined to be “at least 10% disabled” qualify to receive some benefits. If your disability becomes more severe over time, you may be eligible for increased payments. (These benefits are not available to service members who have received a dishonorable discharge, however.) We help veterans file for the benefits they deserve.
Establishing that your disability is service-connected
It is important to understand that you will only be eligible for this program if your disability is connected to injuries suffered while you were on active duty. There are many ways for an injury or disability to be considered service-connected:
- If your injury was directly caused by something that happened during active duty military service, it should be considered a direct service connection.
- If you had a preexisting injury that was made worse or aggravated by conditions during your service, you should also qualify.
- Legal presumptions allow those with certain diseases or conditions to receive benefits without establishing proof that their service caused the disease. A common example is Vietnam veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange and now suffer from Parkinson’s disease.
- You may also qualify if one disability causes another to form, or if treatment by the Veterans Administration (VA) healthcare system leaves you injured.
